Common Car Accident Head Injuries

The head injuries below are often described as closed head injuries. They are the result of a blow to the head during an accident such as an occupant’s head striking the windshield or vehicle frame. This type of primary brain damage can include:

Skull fracture: The person’s skull is broken.
Contusions or bruises: These often occur under an area of the person’s skull where it made direct contact with an object. The force of the blow can drive the brain up against the skull and cause areas of bruising.
Blood clots: A blood clot may occur between the skull and the brain or inside the brain itself.
Lacerations: These can also be the result of the force of a blow to the skull. The blow may cause brain movement against the boney ridges of the inner skull and result in a tear of the brain tissue or blood vessels in the brain.
Nerve damage: Damage to the connecting nerves within the brain can result from the same movement that causes lacerations to tissue or blood vessels.
Many of these head injuries also have a corresponding brain injury that must be diagnosed and treated by a doctor. Sometimes this may require a period of time during which the person will be observed for symptoms. This is one of the reasons that it is so very important to have a medical professional examine a driver who has injured his or her head in a car accident. Without an accurate diagnosis, these kinds of injuries can become life-threatening.

How Long Does Recovery From A Head Injury Take?

Head injuries, like back or neck injuries, can take a long time to heal. Some injuries such as a bump and a mild concussion may only take a few days, but a blood clot or laceration to the brain may require surgery and a long period of convalescence.

Depending on where the injury was located, rehabilitative therapy, speech therapy and other services may be needed to make progress in recovering. Receiving appropriate compensation for the injuries sustained can make the process of recovery less stressful and ensure that the needed services are available.
